Description Built by the US Navy for lighter-than-air ships. This base had two hangers. One was made of wood, and was the largest wood structure in the world. The wood hanger burned in 1995. Eight blimps patrolled the east coast during World War Two from this base. In the mid-fifties, the blimps were used to search the swamps of eastern North Carolina for moonshiners. Today the steel hanger is completely restored and used for private airships.
