Designed by architect Luther Lashmit of the Winston-Salem architectural firm Northrup & O'Brien. The building was modeled after the Reynolds Building in Winston-Salem. This skyscraper was Raleigh's tallest building from 1942 to 1964. 680 WPTF Radio was located in this building. The mechanical section is two storeys tall and contained a new air conditioning system designed by Willis Carrier for tall buildings. Four additional floors were added to the western wing of the building in 1947. The building was purchased and renovated by the State of North Carolina in 1978.
