Description • Atami Castle is a modern imitation Japanese castle located in Nishikigaura. Unlike historic castles such as Himeji Castle, it has no historical origin. It is not a reconstruction of a previously existing structure either, unlike Hiroshima Castle or Osaka Castle.
• It was built in 1959 as a tourist attraction and landmark for Atami City, and did not exist during Japan’s feudal/samurai era.
• The building is a reinforced-concrete structure housing exhibits on Japanese history. It also has an observation deck offering scenic views of the city, surrounding mountains, and the Pacific Ocean.
• It is approximately 45 meters (148 ft) tall when measured from the south, and approx. 30 meters (98 ft) tall when measured from the north entrance.
