The New Chitose Airport opened in 1988.

It is one of the busiest airports in Japan, and it has two terminals (domestic + international).

The airport has two runways. Both are 3,000 meters (9,843 ft / 1.86 miles) long.

There's an adjacent Japan Air Self-Defense Force facility, the Chitose Air Base, which also has two runways. One of them has a length of 4,000 meters (13,123 ft / 2.49 miles), while the other is 2,700 meters (8,858 ft / 1.68 miles) long.

The airport and the air base are interconnected by taxiways, and aircraft at either facility can enter the other by ground if permitted. Thus, the combined facilities have a total of 4 runways.

The international terminal, an expansion of the domestic terminal, and an approximately 250-meter (820 ft) long passageway connecting the two terminals were built between 2008 and 2011.

Although most of the domestic terminal is 4 stories high, some areas have a 5th floor (hotel).
