The Chubu Centrair International Airport, also known as Central Japan International Airport, was built on an artificial island in Ise Bay and it opened in February 2005. The name "Centrair" is a portmanteau of the words "Central" and "Airport".
It is one of the busiest airports in Japan and it has been certified as a 5-Star Airport by Skytrax.
It has one runway with a length of 3,500 meters (11,483 ft / 2.17 miles).
Two new runways are planned at the airport: the first one will be 3,290 meters (10,794 ft / 2.04 miles) long, located to the east of the existing runway, and to be completed in 2027; the second one will be 3,500 meters (11,483 ft / 2.17 miles) long, located to the west of the existing runway, and to be constructed on an expanded portion of the airport's artificial island. Landfill expansion work will have to be carried out, and when completed, this new runway will replace the existing one.
Terminal 1 is connected to the Central Japan International Airport Station, a train station on the Meitetsu Airport Line, which connects the airport to Tokoname City via a bridge.
