Description When built, it was the first direct link between the north and south portions of Charleston. Due to the heavy metal deterioration, which existed on the structure in 1979, an 8-ton weight limit was placed on the bridge forcing trucks to travel over the paralleling Silas N. Pearman Bridge.
Currently the bridge carries the southbound traffic of US Highway 17 over the Cooper River and Town Creek and will soon be replaced by a new 8-lane, cable-stayed bridge.
