Description In May 1899 Nikola Tesla established for experiments with high voltages and high frequencies an experimental station at Colorado Springs as it offered beside much space also the possibility of examining the conductive nature of low pressure air, which he considered important for his research.
The station had the largest Tesla coil ever built with a diametre of 15 metres. Its equipped was able to produce voltages up to 12 million volts, which could be used for generating artificial lightning with lengthes up to 41 metres.
Tesla's experiments resulted in some bizarre effects in the neighbourhood of the station: so people observed when walking that sparks between their feet and the ground occured and that sparks occured from water line taps when touched. Light bulbs in the neighbourhood of the station glowed even when turned off. Horses in a livery stable bolted from their stalls after receiving shocks through their metal shoes. Butterflies swirled in circles with blue halos of St. Elmo's fire around their wings.
It is claimed that Nikola Tesla has received at the end of 1899 an extraterristical radio message. What he really had received is unknown. It was probably a signal from an other experimentator.
On January 7th, 1900 Tesla made his final entry while in Colorado Springs. 4 years later, Tesla was sued for unpaid bills in Colorado Springs and Colorado Springs Tesla Experimental Station was demolished.
