Description
In this hall the first static HVDC static inverter in Austria was installed. It was used between 1983 and 1996 for the interconnection of the Austrian with the Czech Power grid, which were operated until 1995 asynchronous.

Each static inverter consisted of 528 thyristors with a maximum current capacity of 3790 Amperes, which were at time
of construction the largest in the world. The maximum rate of the static inverter, which worked with 145 kV was 550 MW.

GK Dürnrohr was a back-to-back inverter, which means that both static inverters are in the same hall. The HVDC powerline between them is just approximetely a few metres long.

In 1995 the power grids between Austria and Czech were synchronised which allowed a direct interconnection of both grids.
As Austria has in opposite to Germany no strong 380 kV grid, GK Dürnrohr remained at first in use.

After some power plants in Poland were equipped with efficient systems for the regulation of the frequency of the power grid, the inverter was shut down on October 31, 1996. The high-voltage switching devices were afterwards used in other Austrian substations and the transformers were also used there after some modifications.

The static inverter was scrapped in 2007. Since then the hall is used as a workshop.
