Description Monument dedicated to the victims of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. On the top of the column there was originally a bronze statue of the goddess of victory "Victoria".
This statue was taken down on July 10, 1943 and its metal was used for other purposes.
On May 30, 1986, three members of the German political party CDU erected in a “night and fog campaign” a new Victoria statue on the column, which was removed by the city administration on June 4, 1986. It was a 3.6 meter high construction of linen and Styrofoam created by the set designer of the Oldenburg State Theater and made weatherproof with a coat of glue. The dismantling took place because the Peace Column may not be used for advertising purposes of political parties.
