Description The Väo Power Plant, also known as the Tallinn Power Plant, is a combined heat and power plant that uses biomass and peat as fuel. It is located in the eastern part of Tallinn, specifically in the depleted Väo limestone quarry. The plant provides heat to Lasnamäe and the central districts of Tallinn.
Construction began in 2007 and the power plant was commissioned in 2009. The project was initiated by Estonian businessman Urmas Sõõrumaa and was later sold to an affiliate of Dalkia. Utilitas, the company that owns the power plant, has been majority-owned by Estonian businessman Kristjan Rahu since 2011.
The power plant, which is fuelled by wood chips and peat, has a capacity of 25 MW of electrical power and 49 MW of heat. Notably, the power plant features a 70-metre (230 ft) high flue gas stack supplied by Noviter, a Finnish company. The project was completed with the help of several companies, including KMG Inseneriehitus, Siemens, BMH Technology Oy, Noviter, and Metso.
