Description
After the renovation of Energy Block 11, it became possible to abandon completely the production of electricity and heat in the first to third stage units (commissioned between 1959 and 1963), which had exhausted their resources. In total, 154.7 billion kWh of electricity and 47.8 billion kWh of heat were produced by the first to third stage plants during their lifetime.
Along with the obsolete installations, four 150-metre-high chimneys became obsolete and it was decided to dismantle them in order to avoid the need to spend money on their maintenance in the future. The cost of dismantling one chimney is around five million kroons. The first of the four chimneys was dismantled in 2005, the second in 2008 and the remaining two in 2010-2011.
The fourth chimney at the Baltic power plant was dismantled by Irbistero in October-November 2005.
The second chimney at the Baltic power plant was demolished by a Latvian company - the limited liability company Spetsenergo. All demolition works on the stack, which included the dismantling of the stack from the +150 m to the +40 m mark, were to be completed by 1 December 2007 at the latest.
