During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, the citizens of Lyon took a vow to enlarge and beautify the existing sanctuary of Fourvière
if their city was spared from Prussian occupation. As this happened in 1872 construction work on a new church, Notre-Dame de Fourvière, started. Notre-Dame de Fourvière houses two
churches situated on top of each other. The upper sanctuary is very ornate, while the lower is a much simpler design.
Further the building contains a museum of Sacred Art and an observation deck. A very remarkable feature is the circumstance that under the both topmost crosses antennas for 13
FM-broadcasting stations with transmission powers up to 4 kW are installed, which are not visible
