Tallest Doric column in the world commemorating the Battle of Lake Erie, in which Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry led a fleet to victory in one of the most decisive naval battles in the War of 1812 and to celebrate the long-lasting peace among Britain, Canada and the United States of America.
Although substantially completed in 1915, Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial could as result of funding problems not inaugurated before July 31st, 1931.
In June 2006 a piece of granite with a weight of 230 kg fell from the observation deck and created a crater in the plaza. After this incidence, at which no person was killed or hurt the monument #, was closed for 2 months for visitors.
