Description Original Architect: Stinson, Arey & Hall
1960s Renovation Architect: Stinson, Hall, Hines & Associates
Completion: April 1951
Renovation: 1962-1963
Built as a Modernist-style office building, in 1951, for Security Life & Trust Company's headquarters. In 1962-1963, the building was completely reclad in the International architectural style. This reclad removed all of the windows, except for the windows in the stairwells. Removing the windows saved the insurance company money, but created a terrible/depressing place to work. These complaints would lead to the insurance company building a new 21-storey headquarters, in 1978-1980, with a dramatic wall of windows on its northern facade.
Became the Integon Insurance Building in 1969.
Purchased by Grubb Properties in Summer 2017. As a reclad windowless box, it's not desirable for reuse. The early Modernist design, that made it architecturally significant, was removed in 1962. Without windows, the building isn't desirable for office or residential conversion. Any renovation plans would require a complete reclad and asbestos abatement; preventing the developer from using tax credits. The new owner will demolish and replace this building with a much larger new construction apartment & retail building.
