Xinyu, also known as Gangcheng, is a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Jiangxi Province. It is located in the central western part of Jiangxi Province, on the western section of the Zhejiang Jiangxi Railway. The longest part of the city is 101.9 kilometers from east to west, and the widest part is 65 kilometers from north to south. It is 150 kilometers east of the provincial capital Nanchang, and borders Zhangshu City and Xingan County to the east, Yuanzhou District of Yichun City to the west, Ji'an County, Anfu County, and Xiajiang County to the south, and Shanggao County and Gao'an City to the north. As of February 2024, the total area of the city is 3178 square kilometers. As of the end of 2023, the city's permanent population was 1.1985 million. The Xinyu landform, according to the topographic map of Jiangxi Province, belongs to the north-south high, middle low flat, with the Yuan River running through it and the east open. The mountain range mainly runs from north to southwest. Due to the geological structure, it is generally characterized by towering peaks, steep mountain terrain, and deep valleys. As of 2023, the city's gross domestic product is 126.189 billion yuan.
As of 2022, there are 421 schools of various types in the city, with 61900 students enrolled in regular universities. There is one national engineering technology research center, 15 provincial engineering technology research centers, and 1233 medical and health institutions (including village clinics). Among them, there are 24 hospitals and 33 health centers.
Since the establishment of Xinyu County in the second year of Wu Baoding during the Three Kingdoms period (267 AD), its administrative system has undergone several changes. In May 1930, the Soviet Government of Xinyu County was established in Shangmuyuan Village, Liangshan Town, with jurisdiction over the East, West, and South districts. In May 1957, the State Council announced the renaming of Xinyu to Xinyu, which has been in use ever since. In October 1983, the People's Government of Jiangxi Province approved the establishment of Yushui District within the jurisdiction of the former Xinyu County.
