Ningde, commonly known as Mindong, is a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Fujian Province. It is located in the northeast of Fujian Province, bordering the East China Sea to the east, Fuzhou to the south, Nanping to the west, and Wenzhou City in Zhejiang Province to the north. As of 2022, there are 9 districts and counties under its jurisdiction, including 43 townships, 69 towns, 14 street offices, 215 neighborhood committees, and 2134 village committees. The registered residence population of the city is 3.5523 million. In 2022, the gross domestic product of Ningde City was 3554.62 billion yuan, an increase of 10.7% over the previous year.
The city has a land area of 13452 square kilometers, a sea area of 44600 square kilometers, and a coastline of 1046 kilometers. Among them, mountains and hills are the main ones, and there are small areas of marine and alluvial plains along the coast. Most of the rivers within the territory run in a northwest southeast direction, with 24 larger rivers. Non metallic minerals are relatively abundant, followed by metallic minerals, and energy minerals are scarce. Ningde is located along the southeast coast and has a subtropical maritime monsoon climate. Spring and summer rain and heat occur simultaneously, while autumn and winter benefit from both light and temperature. The four seasons are distinct, and the oceanic monsoon climate is significant.
As of the end of 2022, the city has 12 provincial-level or above laboratories in scientific research, including 1 national key laboratory, 1 provincial-level innovation laboratory, and 10 provincial-level key laboratories. There are 19 new research and development institutions, including 8 at the provincial level and 11 at the municipal level. There are 50 co creation spaces, including 1 registered at the national level, 18 at the provincial level, and 31 at the municipal level. In terms of medical care, there are a total of 3006 medical and health institutions in the city, including 52 hospitals, 107 health centers, and 2100 village clinics.
Surrounded by mountains and facing the sea, the eastern part of Fujian has abundant tourism resources. The Ningde Global Geopark, consisting of three major scenic spots: Baishuiyang, known as the "Water Paradise," Tailao Mountain, known as the "Sea Immortal Capital," and Baiyun Mountain, known as the "Famous Mountains and Wonders," has been officially listed in the UNESCO Global Geopark Network. The Pingnan Baishuiyang Yuanyangxi Scenic Area and Fuding Tailao Mountain within the territory have successively been awarded 5A level scenic spots; One of the top ten most beautiful islands in China, including Fuding Yushan Island and many other tourist attractions.
The distribution of Chinese dialects in Ningde City is quite complex. Based on the similarities and differences within the dialects, various dialects in eastern Fujian are represented by the Fuzhou dialect system.
