Tongling, a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Anhui Province, is named after copper. It is located in the central southern part of Anhui Province, downstream of the Yangtze River, bordering Hefei to the north, Chizhou to the south, Wuhu to the east, and Anqing to the west. It belongs to the north subtropical humid monsoon climate. The total area is approximately 3008 square kilometers. As of 2021, Tongling has 3 districts, 1 county, and 4 districts under its jurisdiction. At the end of 2022, the permanent resident population was 1.301 million, and the city's gross domestic product was 120.99 billion yuan.
The longest north-south stretch of the city is about 56 kilometers, and the widest east-west stretch is about 103.9 kilometers. The central urban area slopes from southeast to northwest, forming a belt shaped terrain with a width of about 5 kilometers and a length of 20 kilometers. The main minerals are copper, sulfur, iron, gold, etc. The food crops include rice, wheat, etc.
At the end of 2022, the city had 636 health institutions of various types, including 31 hospitals, 26 health centers, 3 disease prevention and control centers, 3 ordinary universities, 5 various types of secondary vocational education (excluding technical schools), 24 ordinary high schools, 61 junior high schools, and 147 provincial-level or above research and development institutions, including 2 national quality inspection centers and 54 provincial-level or above enterprise technology centers (4 national level).
During the Xia and Shang dynasties, the Tongling area belonged to Yangzhou. After the unification of China by Qin, Tongling belonged to Fu Commandery. In the Ming Dynasty, Tongling County belonged to Chizhou Prefecture and was directly under the jurisdiction of Nanjing. In January of the first year of the Republic of China (1912), the prefecture was abolished and Tongling County was directly under the jurisdiction of Anhui Province. From June 1914 to August 1928, it belonged to Wuhu Road in Anhui Province. After October 1932, it belonged to the Second Special Zone. On August 6, 1938, it was transferred to the Eighth Special Administration and liberated from Tongling. In 1971, Tongling Special Zone was renamed Tongling City, which was directly under the jurisdiction of the province
