In 2021, the city governed 1 district, 2 cities, 10 counties, 12 provincial-level economic and technological development zones (10 industrial development zones, 2 agricultural development zones), and 147 townships (offices). At the end of 2022, the city's permanent population was 4.7185 million, and the city's regional GDP reached 230.11 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 5.6%. Yuncheng belongs to the warm temperate continental monsoon climate, with three types of landforms: mountains, hills, and plains. The plain area accounts for 58.2% of the total area, while mountains and hills account for 41.8% of the total area. Yuncheng City is rich in mineral resources, with over 60 types of mineral resources such as coal, copper, iron, and aluminum discovered. The coal reserves amount to approximately 450 million tons.

During the Spring and Autumn Period, it was under the jurisdiction of the State of Jin. In 669 BC, Duke Xian of Jin established the capital in Jiang (now Jiang County). After the division of the Han, Zhao, and Wei families into Jin, Yuncheng belonged to Wei. In 1950, Yuncheng and Linfen Jinnan 28 counties established Yuncheng Special Zone and Linfen Special Zone. In 1970, the Jinnan region was abolished and divided into two areas, Yuncheng and Linfen, according to its original administrative system. In June 2000, with the approval of the State Council, the Yuncheng area was abolished and replaced by a prefecture level Yuncheng city. Famous attractions in Yuncheng City include Yuncheng Salt Lake, Emperor Shun's Mausoleum, Guandi Temple, Wanrong Houtu Temple, Ruicheng Yongle Palace, Yongji Stork Tower, Wanrong Li Family Mansion, Wenxi Pei Family's "Chinese Prime Minister Village" and so on
