In the 31st year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1398), Weihaiwei was established to prevent the invasion of Japanese pirates. In the 24th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1898), Britain forcibly leased Weihaiwei. In the 26th year of the Guangxu reign (1900), the Weihaiwei Administrative Office was established, under the jurisdiction of the British Colonial Office. In October 1930, China reclaimed Weihaiwei and established the Weihaiwei Administrative Region. In August 1983, Weihai City was renamed as a provincial-level county-level city.
