Description
Bürgermeister-Smidt-Gedächtniskirche Bremerhaven is the largest church in Bremerhaven and a very remarkable building by its Gothic revival architecture.
Construction work started in 1846, but were cancelled as construction ground was bad. In 1853 a second successful attempt started.
A basement of 522 pillars was set up. Church was inaugaurated on April 22nd, 1855, although work on 80 metres tall tower lasted until 1870.
On September 18th, 1944 the church was destroyed by an air raid. It was rebuilt between 1954 and 1960.
