Description Modeled after St. Mary’s Parish Church in Snettisham, England, this church is often cited as one of the most outstanding examples of Gothic Revival Architecture in North America. The cornerstone was laid by Bishop John Medley in 1846 soon after arriving in Canada and was consecrated in August of 1853.
The outside dimensions of the Cathedral are 172’ x 67’ and the original spire was 172’ in height. A fire in 1911 destroyed the spire and severely damaged other parts of the roof. A new spire was built to a height of 198’ under a strengthened foundation to incorporate the added weight.
