Thirty investors raised $50,000 in 1835 for the project. Construction started on July 9, 1836. North Carolina Governor John Motley Morehead bought this building in 1854. It was the first in the South with electric lighting. It was saved as a model project with the Preservation Tax Credits of 1976 and completely renovated in 1984. The building is also known for the famous 1830's Graffiti Wall on the fourth floor, where workers left drawings and messages.
