Eight West Third Apartments is the oldest skyscraper in North Carolina. It was expanded three times, including an expansion that divided the ground floor into two floors and another expansion that grew the building to the west, replacing Owens Drug Store. This building was originally the headquarters for Wachovia Bank & Trust Company. Wachovia was the largest bank in the Carolinas when the building opened and Wachovia would grow to become the southeast's largest bank before moving to a taller building a block to the north. During the 1970s, this building became a government office building. JDL Castle renovated it in 1983 for BB&T Bank. It was acquired by PMC Property Group in December 2021. It was converted to apartments in 2024.
