- Served as the Thurston County Courthouse until the panic of 1893 forced the county to sell it to Washington State for $350,000 in 1901, to serve as the Washington State Capitol from 1901 till 1927.
- Same architect is to design a new east wing to accommodate the legislature and additional state offices completed in 1905.
- This building was formerly around 46 m tall with eight turrets and a central, eight-sided clock tower that could be seen from all over town.The clock tower was destroyed in a fire in 1928, reducing the height.
- In 1949 an earthquake destroyed the central clock rotunda and 10/12 conical shaped towers located around the building. The dome and cupola was also damaged.
- It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
- Renovated and upgraded 1981-1983 by Tonkin, Hoyne, Lokan Architecture & Urban Design and also in 1993 for the Office of the Public Instruction Superintendent.
