• Before the current Hiroshima Airport opened, the city's air travel needs were served by an older airport located in Hiroshima City's Nishi Ward, in the Kanon-Shinmachi area; the old facility was renamed Hiroshima-Nishi Airport after the new one opened in Mihara City; Hiroshima-Nishi eventually closed down in 2012 and was converted into the Hiroshima Heliport

• The airport is located on high ground, at about 331 meters (1,086 ft) above sea level, and was built by reshaping mountainous terrain into a suitable flat area

• It has one runway with a length of 3,000 meters (9,843 ft / 1.86 miles); prior to extension, it was 2,500 meters (8,202 ft / 1.55 miles) long

• It offers or has offered flights to several domestic destinations (Tokyo, Sapporo, Sendai, Naha), as well as some international ones (Hong Kong, Taipei, Seoul, Shanghai, Hanoi, etc.)
