Description Montauk Air Force Station AN/FPS-35 Radar Tower was built for a long range search radar from AN/FPS-35 type built by Sperry, which had a range of 370 kilometres. Its rotable antenna, which is 38 metres long and 12 metres tall is installed on one of the largest rolling-element bearings in the world with a diametre of 3.84 metres.
It is situated on a 25.76 metres tall concrete tower with 5 floors, which has a square cross section with a side length of 18.36 metres. 6 electric motors. each with a power of 73.5 kW are used for rotating the antenna.
The radar went in service in 1960, but had to be modified in 1961 as it jammed broadcasting transmitters. It was in service until January 31st, 1981. Afterwards the radar equipment was dismantled while the tower including its huge antenna were left standing. In order to avoid the antenna to be torn down by strong winds it was kept movable.
Under the tower a secret underground facility exists, which was used until 1984. Its exact use is unknown. Some claim, it was used for experiments with drugs while others say experiments beyond our physical knowledge were taken there.
