Description Architects: • Isaac Booth • Richard Swarbrick Dugdale
Decorated tower designed as chimney for the Washer Lane dye works owned by John Wainhouse.
In 1874, John Wainhouse sold the factory to his works manager, who refused to pay the cost of the chimney's construction, so Wainhouse kept the tower for himself and used it as an observatory. The original architecht, Isaac Booth, left after a dispute and was replaced by another local architect, Richard Swarbrick Dugdale, who designed the elaborate galleries and the corona dome on its top. On September 9th, 1875 Wainhouse Tower, which was never used as chimney, was completed.
