How Strong Is Your Downtown?

Some City's downtowns are very recognizable and unique, while others are fairly generic, with many generic buildings. The styles of buildings, the years and eras when they were constructed can tell alot about a city. How is your Cities downtown?

I don't really get what definition of "strong" you want. It's a rather generic term. I also don't quite understand what you want us to compare to, as far as "recognizable and unique" are concerned.

To other cities? To the rest of the city?

I guess the answer to the very vague question is to post pics of a cities downtown. Very random thread.

Paris

Paris CBD is surely one of world most beautiful, with am mix of Haussmannian building, 20th century buildings, and 21th buildings with old facade

But the street view are better to see the beauty.
The CBD is attractive the vacancy rate is at 2.8% but not very active in office construction only 84,345 m² or 907,882 ft u/c.
Nothing compared at Paris other business districts.

strong to me, doesnt mean "skyline". Strong to me means, how livable, walkable, playable and workable. Is it somewhere you love to go, just to hang out.....

The word "strong" definatly don't fit Bergen's downtown at all,
short skyline, old city, small downtown, a lot of NIMBY's, you name it!

Philadelphia's downtown is pretty strong (current city)

Wilmington's downtown dips out of coma between 9-5 and otherwise is nonexistant except for when Barack Obama comes to town:

Normally in this image there would be a few crackheads and a hot dog cart.

Interesting question. I would consider downtown Vancouver to be quite unique. Its downtown looks like nothing else in North America. To the average person it may not be recognizable as Vancouver as it doesn't have much in terms of landmark buildings but like I said, there is no other city on the continent that is comparable in terms of appearance. Many buildings are generic (at least when compared to other buildings within Vancouver) and yet on an individual basis and compared to many other cities they can be quite unique, or at least original, as only recently have some other NA cities begun to take on Vancouver-looking buildings (in which I'm speaking of residential towers of course) and many of these are in fact designed by Vancouver architects.

In terms of eras, Vancouver has quite a few different styles of buildings (though is incomparable to the older cities in this respect of course). However, the further back you go, the generally less significant or 'impactful' buildings get as the city was quite small up until the last few decades really. This leaves Vancouver with quite a number of smaller older buildings, though there are some real gems among them.

So, how is my city's downtown? It's great! Pedestrian friendly, attractive, vibrant, cosmopolitan, thriving, growing, constantly changing, and yet only ever getting better as time goes on. Compared to some older more established cities, Vancouver's downtown has proven that you don't need to be old to be successful.
