Interesting question. I would consider downtown Vancouver to be quite unique. Its downtown looks like nothing else in North America. To the average person it may not be recognizable as Vancouver as it doesn't have much in terms of landmark buildings but like I said, there is no other city on the continent that is comparable in terms of appearance. Many buildings are generic (at least when compared to other buildings within Vancouver) and yet on an individual basis and compared to many other cities they can be quite unique, or at least original, as only recently have some other NA cities begun to take on Vancouver-looking buildings (in which I'm speaking of residential towers of course) and many of these are in fact designed by Vancouver architects.
In terms of eras, Vancouver has quite a few different styles of buildings (though is incomparable to the older cities in this respect of course). However, the further back you go, the generally less significant or 'impactful' buildings get as the city was quite small up until the last few decades really. This leaves Vancouver with quite a number of smaller older buildings, though there are some real gems among them.
So, how is my city's downtown? It's great! Pedestrian friendly, attractive, vibrant, cosmopolitan, thriving, growing, constantly changing, and yet only ever getting better as time goes on. Compared to some older more established cities, Vancouver's downtown has proven that you don't need to be old to be successful.
