Good Lord! That's 324 annualized. Not far away from São Paulo's 400s, a city 20x more populated in a country with the highest number of absolute murders for the past three decades. And Memphis is a city with large suburbans areas inside city proper.

Is it the same story? Gangs, poor young men from ghettos?

Memphis set a record last year (which is saying something) with 397, hopefully they can avoid the spike they had last year, but not good to be ahead pace at this point.

The drops in northern cities like Chicago are also doubly noteworthy because we're having one of our warmest winters ever in recorded history.

Despite having our warmest February ever on record, the downward trend in murders continued in Chicago.

Chicago homicides through February:

2024: 62
2023: 85
2022: 92
2021: 94

Source: Chicago Sun-Times

Down 27% from last year.

And down 34% from 2021 .

The trend for homicide rates literally make no sense. I mean, a possible explanation is that the police didn't care to patrol those neighborhoods after the George Floyd debacle and therefor they killed each other at a higher rate than normal. But I can't imagine that the police are more hardcore in Chicago now than they were in 2021. Also, inflation is through the roof so you would think that murder rates would be higher as people are more stressed over the cost of everything, especially the poor obviously. It would be nice to see a non politically correct rational explanation.

Theres a whole season of the wire dedicated to murder rates in I think the 3rd season. The city didn't report all of the murders to make the mayors office look better. I wonder how much of that happens in places like Chicago.

My stats are pulled from the Sun-Times.

They have zero interest in making the mayor "look good".

Thats fine, I wasn't saying they were cooking the numbers. But I would love to read a paper on why murder trends are lower now.

I think it's more about it coming back down to 2010-2020 levels. The real question is, why did it spike so much in 2021-2023?

George Floyd wasn't the only thing that happened in 2020. There are other good reasons why the murder rate would have rose besides accusing cops of not doing their jobs. Here are a couple other plausible reasons:
  • Domestic violence- a large percentage of murders are domestic violence and people were spending far more time at home starting in March 2020
  • Court system backlog- The courts were disrupted by the pandemic. Everything from arraignments to trials were delayed because of the shutdown, and that inevitably led to some criminals being on the street longer than they otherwise would have been.

Got a friend that used to work at u of c crime lab, now working directly for cpd data area. His simple opinion is that the pandemic disrupted alot of normal money making schemes and caused chaos which led to a spike in murders.
