Winnipeg. It has a head start and the growth rates are not different enough for Quebec to get ahead.

That's remarkable to be around 880k now because it took us AGES, no, AN ETERNITY to only go from 700k to 800k.

Looking forward to Winnipeg breaking the million metro. It's been something like 20 years last time that happened. They must be a long way off before the City proper reaches one million though.

A head start? Quebec City is more than two centuries older and was larger into the 20th century. Winnipeg boomed pre WWI and then saw major growth in the 1950s and 60s as well as in the past 20 years, but Winnipeg has grown more slowly than any other major Canadian citiy in the past century. As the industrial base was decimated, the 1970s to 1990s in particular were quite stagnant, with little better than 10% growth over the three decade period.

Yes, I'm aware of the history. But Winnipeg currently has more people than Quebec City. Therefore, it has a head start on which one will reach one million people first.

Quebec City would need to be growing much faster than Winnipeg to reach that milestone first, but it isn't.

Winnipeg is the metropolis of its own province. That's the main difference.

At first look, One could see its isolation as a weakness but according to the current pop. growth, it seems to be a strength

Are there more Census geographies to be added to either CMA?

So it looks like Winnipeg will push us to 7 Million cities by 2031, and QC will probably push us to 8 by 36's census.

Hamilton isn't that far behind QC, so we might see 9 Million cities by 2036 (not sure how its growth is overall)

The 10th biggest city at the moment seems to be Kitchener, but they're almost 200k off of Hamilton, so we're not likely to see 10 Million cities in Canada until the 2050's at best. (London is a further 50k off of Kitchener but might tip 1M around when KWCG goes over).

That does mean that Ontario's on track to have 5 (well 4.75) of the 11 "Million pop" cities in Canada by the middle of the century. And while it's borderline, there is probably just enough distance between London, KWCG, Hamilton and Toronto for them to maintain their distinctiveness, even at those sizes.

There are several towns and villages around Quebec City which might be added to the CMA but I don't know if it will be in the next census:

Pont-Rouge : 10 993
Donnaconna: 7653
Saint-Agapit : 4703
Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré : 3067
Beaupré : 4194
Saint-Charles-de-Bellechasse : 2652

I'm particularly impressed by the number of words for such small villages.

Do you know ''Notre-dame-des-sept-douleurs'', pop.: 49 ?

I think I've heard of that. It's near Saint-Louis-du-LMFAO! isn't it?
