So what is it about that area... a combination of proximity to Wolseley, (I'm guessing) reasonably priced space, and a somewhat Williamsburg-ish vibe? (the warehouse part closer to the docks, not the Bedford part)

^ I would say it's mostly the Wolseley connection. Portage Ave. is too disjointed and $$, Sherbrook is full, and Westminster is full (and also subject to more Nimbys).

I went to Wall Street Slice this summer, and it was all Wolseley-ites in there.

^Cheap rents, permissive zoning, and proximity to Wolseley and the West End. The West End is the new Wolseley. Lot's of young folks I know who are priced out of Wolseley are buying homes in the West End.
Wall Street slice is great, IMHO.

Yup. It's mostly zoned "M1" - light manufacturing, which means lower land values/rents (compared to commercial zoned land) while still allowing a wide variety of commercial uses you'd find in a slightly gentrifying manufacturing neighbourhood (craft breweries, bakeries, small manufacturing, small cafes, etc.)

And lots of Wall and Erin Streets aren't even that bad from a basic urban perspective... small-scale, up to the sidewalk, not overwhelmed by parking...
I think the earlier comparison to Williamsburg (or Red Hook or Bushwick) with respect to architecturally plain but still potentially very hip manufacturing areas is pretty apt.

Recording studio in the back. Lots of money poured in.
As of a month and a half ago, the front portion was not leased out.

It turned out fairly well. I wasn't sure at the start, but the white panels are looking good.

Yeah, I like it. It hasn't fundamentally changed the building in any way which is good, because it looked pretty good to begin with. It's just a freshening up. Good stuff.

I hadn't noticed that before, but now that you mention it, there is more than a slight resemblance, it's sort of a scale model of FCP. And then there are BMO's former offices at 333 Main Street which is pretty much a mini-version of their Calgary tower.

And after getting those two towers built BMO pretty well abandoned both of them...go figure.

Noticed a new coffee shop going in the ground floor of 300 Assiniboine. Great news. That area needs more amenities like that.

There is currently a giant fire on the top floor of the future Hyatt downtown. Dozens of emergency vehicles, very smoky all around portage and main. There were three fire trucks with ladders spraying to the top floor... to be honest I didn’t even know WFPS had equipment that could go that high. Assumed they did, but never seen it before. Pretty crazy scene.

^whelp, so much for that

Must have been a mess of a project if it was left unsecured to the point where someone could get in and start a fire. Who was behind this thing again? I was under the impression that it was a legitimate developer.

...or was this all just some crazy nuit blanche exhibit?

I was at a pharmaceutical conference at the Westin yesterday. There were no suspicious characters hanging around.
