Some Gorges & Waterfalls of Ithaca

Thought I'd post some pics from Flickr which show why the saying goes "Ithaca is Gorges".
Obviously the pictures were taken at different times of the year.
The photographer is above each photo. Sorry some of these are so big, but I think it enhances the impact.

We'll start with Cascadilla Gorge in my old neighborhood of Collegetown.

1. by Outdoorthespian - a path is going down near the right side of waterfall

2. by futur simple - The gazebo belongs to one of Cornell's fraternities.

3. by futur simple - Some big a$$ icicles

4. by zyuzwa

5. by zyuzwa

6. by daphonz - Be careful if you've been drinking.

Next up is Fall Creek gorge on the northern side of Cornell University's main campus.

7. by Hobbs vs Boyle - Bebee Lake at the top, a person crossing the bridge, and a spooky old structure in the gorge.

8. by fallsguyd - Old power plant in gorge

9. by gws154 - Suspension foot bridge over Fall Creek at top.

10. by Jgunderlach - A visitor crosses the suspension bridge.

11. by jessto - Maybe the visitor above was heading to the Johnson Art Museum, designed by I. M. Pei.

12. by nyjan52 - A couple of fishermen at Ithaca Falls, a block from my old high school.

13. by poetdiva - Ithaca Falls in the winter.

Next is Six Mile Creek between East Hill and South Hill.

14. by Ioxoceles - Swimmers at the dam for the city's resevoir.

15. by fallsguyd - Wells Falls (and funky tree to the right), below the dam.

16. by fallsguyd - Old mill near Wells Falls, sometimes folks jump into the pool from the windows, yikes.

17. by Ancient Wisdom - The Six Mile creek curves between the buildings and the trees to the right going under the bridge.

18. by daphonz - The creek continues to curve through downtown Ithaca.

On to Buttermilk Falls State Park, just outside the city limits to the south.

19. by Pilgrim Elaine

20. by nirakara - Not always a lot of water flow, and there's a hiking trail up the right side.

21. by smikulen

22. by Mimi K - Lots of steps.

23. by tuxwurld - Fun shower.

24. by Piedmont Fossil - Pinnacle Rock

Down the road about 5 miles south is Robert Treman State Park.

25. by sbosshart - Fun hiking path.

26. by K unit

27. by jtonole - Lucifer Falls

28. by aindap - Where I learned to swim.

And finally, Taughannock Falls State Park, about 8 miles north of Ithaca. It's a 215 foot drop, one of the tallest in the East.

29. by outdoorthespian - Notice the pedestrian bridge and viewing area at bottom of pic.

30. by outdoorthespian - a smaller waterfall along the 1 mile hike from the park entrance to the big falls.

31. by taradvm - yeah, it gets cold sometimes.

32. by amerks23 - From upper lookout area.

33. by SiegerGallery - It's a big space (notice the people in the bottom right)

And all the water you've seen flows into Cayuga Lake:

34. by wnywaterfallers

Hope you enjoyed the pics, and thanks for putting up with me reliving some memories.

Wow, what a beautiful place. I forget sometimes how rugged the landscape is in New York. That one waterfall is spectacular. Love the foliage mixed with the gray rock face.

Holy cow, what an amazing place! Thanks, Ex-Ith! I had no idea about all this stuff, and I'm applying to teach at Ithaca College. Now I'm really hoping I get the job.

^ Thanks Bo. I hope you get the job you want, and if it's in Ithaca, we better see some photo threads.

I must say I do know how American cities look like but the American scenery outside the wellknown spots is a little underrated imho.
Lovely thread thanks

Thanks for the replies Its & Grumpy. I guess I grew accustomed to the natural features of the city while growing up there, but after being away for a while, I've come to appreciate it again. btw, the first 18 pics are within the city limits.
