Could be cool, provided they can resist the temptation to cover it in grey spandrel (particularly on the south elevation). I wouldn't want to live there though - the bars will make the inevitably tiny units feel like jail cells.

It's an interesting site at least, being a sloped, flatiron shape. Currently surrounded mostly by bungalows, but that area around Caledonia station will be another high-rise node in no time (a dozen or so other towers currently proposed there, up to 60 stories):

Initial released renderings for the proposed, approved and already funded NEW BRUNSWICK MUSEUM in Saint John.

Edit: nevermind... Diamond Schmitt. The one thing they do well is institutional design... this is one of their best imo.

Yeah, nice addition. I don't like how it integrates with the existing structure. Sacrifice some of the atrium and set it's facade further back. Right now, the original Doesn't shine. It has a bit of a facadectomy impression.

It sits right on the edge of a bluff overlooking the water. Not much room for a setback.

Went on Google Maps, they must be expropriating a few houses to build it.

If I was Mater of the Universe, I'd build two wings, one on each side of the heritage structure, with small (narrow, same height) glass atriums on both sides and wrapping around the back so that the old building remains visible from outside.

That of course is probably not realistic because of Victoria Square and/or the bluff.

It's two thumbs up from me. It looks great. Nothing makes an historic building stand out more than contrasting it with a modern building. The reverse is true too. I like the near equal proportions of historic/modern. I also like the wooden structure within. A nod to New Brunswick's lumber history perhaps?

Just make sure they consult with the city of Edmonton before deciding on final materials for this build.....

But yeah, it looks pretty epic!

Apparently the lead architect on this grew up in Saint John and has dreamed of landing this commission.

Second that, Old Saint John is starting to blossom. Its about time and I hope the project survives the usual back and forth of N.B. politics. This has had the gestation period of for ever.

This thing should be torn down, what an eyesore. It looks like a community centre from somewhere north of the arctic circle.

That thing in Edmonton is a travesty. I can't begin to understand how that even happened. It's not like Teeple and Stantec are know for their bad designs.

The DSAI designed library in Ottawa looks good so far. Waiting patiently for the stone cladding.

I agree. this is the most hideous looking thing I have ever seen that has been recently built. disgusting... eyesore is even too kind of a descriptor for it.
