^^ yeah I know, I said it just seems the second half of the curtain is taking twice as long as the first half.

I talked to one of the workers at Trump and he said they are a little behind on the park, but should be done by fall.

Recently added photographies have made me I want to visit Chicago immediately! Unbelievable snapshots. As far as I am concerned these all new buildings: Trump, Aqua, Millennium Park have, totally in a positive way, changed the skyline of The Windy City. Well, maybe someday I'll have an opportunity to walk down the Chicago's streets :)

Been watching this one closely, because it's one of my favorites.

BUT page 1 renders vs. these (above) photos: Didn't it lose something off the top? I've been anticipating the 3-4 story termination above the roofline that gave the southern edge of this building its dramatic "blade"-like flair, but the steel superstructure they've built so far doesn't seem quite so tall.

Does this also mean (presuming they're not building more) that the official height may be a bit shorter? Will it still break 800'?

andydie
Jul 3, 2009, 5:47 PM
well when you check the render you can see that over the balconies 2 rows of glass are followed by what looks like 4 rows of the blade effect glass. If the pannels are all the same size i think maybe one or two more floors of steal should follow but i guess we have to sit and wait how it will turn out

it's funny because some people believe global warming is a giant scam that has increased al gore's net worth from 2 million when he left office to 100 million now. follow the money

more on topic, if the owners are given the choice to open their windows, it just makes the units that much more desirable. maybe some owners won't open the window ever, but they could. the random open windows gives an impression that you don't really design: use. window shades, open windows, bikes locked to balconies, these things are all exemplary of a city that is alive, and that's a good thing

I don't mind the open windows. Especially since they appear to open the same distance (at least from ground level). If you could see a whole grid of open windows, some open a little and some all the way, that could look bad.

darn they changed the rooftop design somewhat. if you compare the render on page 1 and this now they surely have left a row of windows out and the blades where cut from 8 to 6. Also the hight seems to have been reduced a bit:(

Remember when we had the exact same doubts about the crown on OMP? ;)

Steel work at the crown is put off until late in the construction cycle, since it has no bearing on the timeline for the delivery of units. In other words: nobody is gonna live up there, so they have all the time in the world to finish the crown.

They're STILL working on the cladding of the core on OMP, yet people have been moved in for quite a while now - just goes to show that outdoor finish work often is the very last thing on the checklist.

What is it that you guys don't get about sustainability? It's about saving energy and reducing your carbon footprint even more than saving money, but when all three can be done simultaneously, why not? Is Northern California really that far ahead of the rest of the country in this thought process?

Uh, how do you think rich people become rich, by wasting their money when it isn't necessary?? Your argument is self-defeating. Plus considering the location, two blocks away from the lakefront, where in the summertime temperatures can be considerably cooler than further inland, it actually does make sense to open your windows and get a nice breeze off the lake once in a while.

Nowhereman1280
Jul 18, 2009, 4:44 PM
^^^ Yeah, I have my windows cracked right now, letting in a nice cool breeze.

Wrabbit, you managed to capture the sweet effects I saw the other day. Since the building is sky colored to begin with, in certain partly cloudy conditions the building is one color and the open windows are reflecting the clouds, making them look like random white squares.

wrab
Jul 18, 2009, 5:35 PM
^ Yeah - I really like that effect too.

Now that we're finally seeing these operable windows in use, I've shed any initial fears that the skin might be too tinsel-like for Chicago - 131 S Dearborn is the cautionary example - these windows really break up the monotony of the reflective glass.

Almost biomorphic how the tower cools itself off by opening up the pores on its skin.

One thing I noticed that I'm not sure that goes with the building is that the crown is somewhat sloped, when every other setback is straight. ^ Yeah, great shot.

Somebody started a thread asking how much your city has changed in the past boom.

To me, I would say that 3 buildings in particular made a dent in Chicago's skyline in this boom: One Museum Park East, Trump, and Legacy

Thanks, Hydro & TUP.

^ Yeah, great shot.

To me, I would say that 3 buildings in particular made a dent in Chicago's skyline in this boom: One Museum Park West, Trump, and Legacy

Hard to argue with those choices, except that you mean (I think) OMP East. Anyway, Trump is taller than anything in town but Willis and fills in the skyline profile from just about every direction; OMP extends the city wall to Grant Park South; Legacy brings the very tall building to the cusp of the Michigan Avenue cliff.

Funny how Aqua, which is a whopper at over 800 feet, barely makes a dent in the skyline.

Other (lesser) candidates: 340 OTP and 300 N LaSalle.

We sure did get some tall ones in that last boom!

I too am impressed by just how dominating this beauty is to Millenium Park area tourists. My parents, who rarely go downtown, kept asking if this was the new supertall Trump Tower they had been hearing about.
Great photos everyone. Is the tower crane down all the way yet?
