I tried to take a shot of the park from Aon last weekend, but the lens is so stupid-wide that a lot of the window creeps into the viewfinder. It definitely has a learning curve, i.e., understanding how the distortion will affect a shot. But it's a lot of fun, too.

Wow! That's an amazing shot, hawkeye view. :slob: You may have captured the close conjunction of Mercury and Jupiter too. I think Jupiter is right above the Legacy in your picture and perhaps Mercury just to the left of the crane hook block. If not, it's probably just an ordinary plane flying into Midway. ;)

I think you're off here. I took the render you marked a few posts back, and one of Wrabbit's pictures, and circled what I believe to be corresponding setbacks:
http://i39.tinypic.com/2my7yps.jpg

These pictures, of course, are from opposite angles, but it seems to me it still has a number of floors (5+ at least) to go.

^The two areas that you circled in each photo correspond to the same part of the building, to be sure, so you're illustration is certainly accurate. But my outline was to illustrate where the progress is currently at. I am not quite sure where I was off in my illustration, and it does account for a few extra floors.

Not to be off topic but I don't think 55 E Monroe wouldn't look so bad if it wasn't so massive. It's almost seems salvageable if the exterior got a new more modern glass retrofit. At lot of people agree it looks ok in person or from street level views, but looks horrible in skyline shots and appears to be a huge gray drab blob blocking the rest of the skyline.

I am not sure whats going on with the new condos being converted. Most likely it will still look horrible.

^Awesome.

I was taking a stroll through GP for about an hour yesterday, and Legacy's presence is very impressive, but its Wabash location prevents it from taking too much of the limelight away from the Mich. Ave. streetwall. Turning out to be a wonderful addition so far, I think.

god, i'm sorry but i've been quietly watching this rise over the last few months, and i this thing is just atrocious.

the other day i was driving down lsd and turned down balbo and realized just how oppressive tall it is. it towers over michigan ave and the gage buildings in a very overwhelming way. it ruined the historic value of even more of wabash ave. i just don't get why people are accepting of this building; it's awful design.

i guess the only acceptable aspect is the glazing and facade, but that's about the only thing separating this from it's, even worse, older brother down the street.

why do we accept the ruining of our historic character with terrible design?

jibba, you don't find this completely and unacceptably overwhelming?

Well, from that perspective, yes, Legacy is certainly very prominent. I wouldn't say overwhelming, though, even in relation to the Michigan Avenue streetwall. At the point that Legacy becomes very prominent, like the photo above, the streetwall has essentially disappeared into the horizon, or at least has a very diminutive presence. Further, when you are at the distance to appreciate the Michigan Avenue structures the most, Legacy isn't in view unless you really crane your neck back, at which point you can't such much of anything on Michigan anyway. The Loop looms over the old, historic row of Michigan Avenue already, but at a distance, creating a dynamic composition of styles, heights, and eras of design. The Legacy adds to this dynamic, albeit in a very substantial way. I could see how it would be too substantial for a lot of people, but not so much for me I guess. I also think the view of it down Monroe with the Hyatt Center makes for a very satisfying match-up.

^Cool shots, wrabbit and george.

george, nice job capturing the colored flags of the Chase Promenade-cum-used car lot. Aren't those things tacky?

Edit: SolarWind sneaked a couple in there in the time it took me to post. Nice ones!

Adrian, do you find Sears, JHC, Chase, IBM, and Aon to be completely overwhelming as well?

Somehow, I'm becoming increasingly impressed with the Park Monroe renov (wrabbit's post - #1393). It makes a blah building just a tad more interesting. I'll wait until it's finished to give a final opinion though. We shall see....
