BIG completes award-winning The Spiral tower in Manhattan

By Josh Niland

BIG has shared photos to follow the firm’s completion of the new 2.8 million-square-foot The Spiral office tower in Midtown Manhattan.

Located at the entrance to the High Line Park on 34th Street between 10th Avenue and Hudson Boulevard, the 66-story structure rises to a total height of 1,031.5 feet and offers the neighborhood skyline a distinctive new visual identity taken from its stepped silhouette and a ribbon of outdoor terraces that cascade down the setback facade to a street level podium.

The design team, which also included Adamson Associates, made wind- and drought-resistant biophilic elements a central part of the building’s exterior, working to unprecedented new heights for commercial high-rises. Certain plant species were selected for their ability to flower as early as February, in combination with evergreen ivy varieties. The program also creates flexible workspaces and includes an exclusive clubhouse on the uppermost floor with sweeping views over the Hudson River.
Quote:
Bjarke Ingels describes: “The Spiral punctuates the northern end of the High Line, and the linear park appears to carry through into the tower, forming an ascending ribbon of lively green spaces, extending the High Line to the skyline. The Spiral ensures that every floor of the tower opens up to the outdoors, creating hanging gardens and cascading atria that connect the open floor plates from the ground floor to the summit into a single uninterrupted workspace. The Spiral is slowly becoming an ascending ribbon of green wrapping around the entire silhouette of the tower — like a 1,000-foot-tall vine at the scale of the city’s skyline.”
Quote:
“The Spiral pioneers a new landscape typology by bringing gardens to a high rise. Its continuous cascade of greenery from one level to another provides office spaces with a new vertical dimension of social and biophilic connectivity. Designed to strengthen collaboration and well-being, each terrace hosts plantings specific to the varying daylight, winds, and temperatures at every floor of the tower. These gardens will welcome neighboring birds, bees, and butterflies to expand New York's biodiversity to the city skyline,” BIG Partner Giulia Frittoli explains further.
Quote:
The Spiral won top honors as the overall Best Tall Building category winner at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat conference that was held last weekend in Singapore. It stands as BIG’s first commercial high-rise in the New York market and is its first completed supertall design preceded by their collaborative 919-foot CapitaSpring project which was debuted alongside Carlo Ratti Associati last September.

a ribbon of gardens ascends bjarke ingels group's latest new york skyscraper 'the spiral'

Quote:
The architects at Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) shape The Spiral with a number of human-centric and sustainable design elements. These include a generous ceiling height and specially selected exterior glass coating to maximize natural light intake, a water management system that collects and redistributes rainwater throughout the tiered landscaping, and materials and finishes that are sourced from sustainable and ethical suppliers. The tower’s slender proportions and use of modern materials and detailing give it a distinctive appearance among the Manhattan skyline. The building’s stepping language resonates with the design aesthetics of classic Manhattan skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center, while its spiraling green ribbon adds a playful and contemporary element.
Quote:
The Spiral’s interiors are just as thoughtfully designed as its exterior. The building’s spacious lobby welcomes visitors with a hanging installation by Dutch studio DRIFT and lush foliage. The office floors are designed to be flexible and adaptable, with select floors offering double height amenity spaces and the option to connect adjacent floors by way of a grand staircase. This encourages interaction among colleagues and provides a variety of spaces for work, collaboration, and relaxation.

The Spiral building’s 13,000-square-foot landscape is the first of its size at or above three hundred feet elevation in New York City. Its native prairie plants on the ground cover are resistant to high winds and droughts. Higher up, shrubs and bushes bloom in winter, and trees flower as early as February. On trellises, English and Boston ivy keep their leaves all year. Plant types vary on each side of the building, depending on sun exposure and wind tolerance.

‘As the trees and grasses, flowers and vines have taken root over the last two summers, The Spiral is slowly becoming an ascending ribbon of green wrapping around the entire silhouette of the tower — like a 1,000-foot-tall vine at the scale of the city’s skyline,‘ Bjarke Ingels continues.

HSBC leadership hosts opening ceremony at The Spiral at Hudson Yards, alongside Mayor Eric Adams, Former Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Partnership for NYC President and CEO Kathryn Wylde, and Architect Bjarke Ingels

May 23, 2024

HSBC today announced the inauguration of its new U.S. headquarters at The Spiral, a renowned office building in New York City’s Hudson Yards neighborhood, marking its largest U.S. relocation to date. This headquarter move, combined with investments in other offices across the country, reinforces HSBC’s position as a leading international bank with a commitment to New York City and its U.S. operations. In addition, the innovative design process for its Hudson Yards office space exemplifies HSBC's progressive approach to reshaping the future of work by fostering an empowering environment for clients and colleagues.

Several distinguished guests participated in the grand opening ceremony, including Mayor of New York City Eric Adams, Former Mayor of New York City and Co-Founder of Bloomberg L.P. Michael R. Bloomberg, Partnership for New York City President and CEO Kathryn Wylde, and Architect Bjarke Ingels, founder of Bjarke Ingels Group. HSBC Group Chairman Mark Tucker and CEO for the U.S. and Americas Michael Roberts led the event and each shared remarks. As part of the ceremony, guests placed artifacts unique and meaningful to HSBC into a time capsule, which will be reopened in 40 years to mark the Bank’s bicentennial.

“Our new U.S. headquarters in the heart of one of the world’s financial capitals symbolizes our commitment to our clients and to this critical market,” said HSBC Group Chairman Mark Tucker. “We remain focused on connecting our clients in the US to opportunities overseas, and those around the world to the US.”

“New York City isn't just coming back — we are back. Under our administration, we have set the record for the highest number of total jobs in our city’s history, and we just hit another milestone with the most private-sector jobs ever in New York. And thanks to investments like the one HSBC is making in New York City today, we are laying the foundation for economic growth in the decades to come,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams. “As one of the world’s leading banks, HSBC’s new headquarters represents a deep commitment to the future of New York City and further cements our city’s position as the financial capital of the world.”

Developed by Tishman Speyer and designed by the prominent architects at Bjarke Ingels Group in collaboration with Adamson Associates and structural engineer WSP Cantor Seinuk, The Spiral is a 66-story office tower in the Hudson Yards neighborhood of New York City opened in 2023. The Spiral visually extends the landscape of the nearby High Line Park up and around the building’s exterior, allowing access to green outdoor terraces from each of the 66 stories. Its distinctive features, including its outdoor terraces with changing plant species as the building rises and ample natural light, enhance the workplace experience, strengthening employee collaboration, creativity and wellbeing.

“Today marks an exciting milestone for HSBC and is the result of years of planning, refining and dedication, all driven by our vision to reimagine our workplace as an environment that inspires our colleagues to serve our clients with unparalleled excellence and expertise,” said HSBC CEO US and Americas, Michael Roberts. “Our nearly 150-year history in the US is stronger than ever, and our new headquarters in New York City stands as a testament to our forward -looking vision for the future.”

The building incorporates various environmentally friendly features, including 13,000 square feet of outdoor space and a water management system that collects overflow rainwater to treat and redistribute through the tiered landscaping, in alignment with HSBC’s sustainability goals. The tower was also designed with adaptable infrastructure to accommodate changing needs and technology advancements over time, complementing HSBC’s forward-looking vision of the workplace. With this vision in mind, M Moser Associates designed HSBC's interior office space to incorporate various environmental, inclusive, and smart features that align with HSBC's sustainability and inclusion goals.

HSBC’s New York attendance jumps to 80% at new office

HSBC’s employee attendance has jumped to 80% at its new office in New York’s Hudson Yards area, said Michael Roberts, CEO of HSBC in the USA and the Americas, on Thursday.

Attendance was 40% before the pandemic at its former base in Bryant Park, Roberts said at an opening ceremony for the site. New York Mayor Eric Adams and former mayor Michael Bloomberg also spoke at the event.

The lender started to relocate staff to the new office in February, and will move traders, the last group, in June.

HSBC’s hybrid working policy has been among the most flexible in the financial industry.

HSBC’s new office has open working spaces overlooking the Hudson River. It includes perks like a coffee bar, wellness center, and a combination of private and shared spaces to tempt workers back.

The company held a “chair fair,” asking employees to weigh in on their favorite furniture, and a “workspace fair” for traders to choose their desk configurations, Mabel Rius, the bank’s head of human resources in the U.S., told reporters.

The office’s massage chair is particularly popular, she said.
