http://www.deseretnews.com/article/7...l-manager.html

SALT LAKE CITY — The brain trust of the much-anticipated City Creek Center has its newest member.

Taubman Centers, owner and operator of the retail portion of the City Creek development, announced Wednesday that Linda Wardell has been named general manager of retail operations for the landmark downtown project, effective next month.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity to move to Salt Lake City," she said. "I'm the luckiest general manager in the world to be involved with this project."...

Downtown - Jazz/NBA Arena Project

I've always held that the Jazz have one of the best looking buildings in the NBA. It's great to see these new updates and improvements added.

Newly remodeled EnergySolutions Arena a treat for fans - Project includes pubs, kids play area, Fanzz stores — and more ice cream.

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/money/5...arena.html.csp

Ice cream was not far from managers’ minds when remodeling began on Energy-Solutions Arena early last summer.

And on Friday, during a tour of the just-completed $4 million project, it was clear that ice cream lovers will not be disappointed.

With the new additions of commercial space, fans now may choose from pubs offering a variety of meals and beverages, exclusive dining areas overlooking the arena and even a play area for children needing a break after the intensity of a Jazz fourth-quarter run.

Downtown - Update
New North Temple Viaduct & Light Rail To Airport Project

The North Temple viaduct, a major connector between the core
of Utah's capital city and points west.

This artist's rendering shows a rebuilt North
Temple viaduct looking south toward The Gateway with FrontRunner
going under the overpass and the airport TRAX line extending across
the viaduct, with total cost of the remake set at $71 million. Source:

The $71 million rebuild is a key part of Utah Transit Authority's future
light-rail TRAX line to Salt Lake City's International Airport. That project
is projected to cost $350 million.

The new structure will descend at 400 West instead of 300 West,
Carpenter said, with a built-in TRAX lane, security lighting, bike and pedestrian
paths, and a transfer station where riders can switch between FrontRunner and TRAX.

Museum deal raises $1.2 million, preserves oak forest

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/home/50...ement.html.csp

The Utah Museum of Natural History will set aside a piece of nature at its Research Park location in a deal that nets the state $1.2 million and keeps a gambol-oak-covered slice of the Wasatch foothills free of pavement in perpetuity.

The University of Utah will sell a conservation easement on 5.27 acres near the museum’s new copper-clad home under a deal U. trustees approved Tuesday. The boot-shaped parcel fronts Colorow Drive and wraps around the south and west of the museum’s parking lot. It will preserve foot paths between the Bonneville Shoreline Trail and Colorow, where officials hope to develop a trailhead...

An anonymous donor has given the U. $1 million to purchase a conservation easement for the scrub oak grove to the west and south of the new Utah Museum of Natural History site.

Census: Utah grows faster than 47 states -
Population jumps by more than half a million this decade, a 24% increase

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/7...47-states.html

..."We're part of this long slow shift of population from the Northeast of our nation and the Midwest of our nation to the South and the West," she said. "People look at Utah as a place of opportunity."...

Kiplinger Reports: Ten Best Cities Of The Next Decade: Salt Lake City, Utah - The talent pool is deep and costs are low in our number-five pick for Best Cities for the Next Decade.

By Jenney Nalevanko

Two years ago, David Flynn owned a business that produced a hot memory drive and employed ten people. A California venture-capital firm tried to lure him to Silicon Valley, but he stayed put and raised $111 million from a host of other top venture firms. Now he employs 250 people who make those drives and is looking to hire more. “We’ve been rewarded for sticking to our guns,” says Flynn.

Talent is key to building a company, and CEO Flynn says that one of Salt Lake City’s secrets is Utah’s “very educated and deep talent pool.” Plus, it doesn’t hurt that “our offices are 15 minutes away from four ski resorts.”

In addition to the city’s strong venture-capital community, the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development offers loans, grants and training to budding businesses. And the Economic Development Corporation of Utah, a public/private organization, fosters Salt Lake City’s pro-business atmosphere by helping to attract new companies.

And you can’t beat the cost of living and doing business in Salt Lake City. Utah has relatively low wages, taxes and operating costs. In fact, the cost of doing business is the third-lowest in the western U.S. and 18th-lowest in the country.

Salt Lake City is home to the University of Utah, internationally recognized for its research in genetics and health sciences, and a hotbed of new-business creation. “The U” is ranked by one measure as first in the country (along with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in launching start-up companies from research-based inventions. “The universities here are more than ivory towers on a hill,” says Jonathan Johnson, president of Internet retailer Overstock.com, which is based in Salt Lake City. Johnson, who hires programmers, mathematicians and statisticians from Utah universities, says the local talent pool is noteworthy for its technical knowledge and outstanding work ethic.

The Salt Lake valley offers a variety of distinctive neighborhoods that boast walking-friendly centers. These hip, diverse districts provide easy access to locally owned retail shops, galleries, restaurants and coffee shops. With the help of the city’s wide, bike-friendly streets, the proximity to such amenities makes it easy to live quite comfortably in these neighborhoods without much need for a car. They provide a small-town feel within steps of the heart of the city.

For those who crave a busier setting, downtown living is about to get a lot more popular. In 2008, Salt Lake’s Downtown Alliance broke ground on the first phase of a revitalization project, City Creek Center, with an estimated price tag of $3 billion. Project leaders hope the City Creek Center will become a lively destination for visitors and residents alike, introducing space for 80 new retailers, a performing-arts theater, fine dining restaurants, and more than 800 residential units. The project also includes plans for a covered pedestrian bridge, joining both sides of Salt Lake City’s Main Street, where the city’s existing businesses will certainly benefit from the additional foot traffic.

Utah Named A Top 10 Film Making Location In The World...

Filmmaking a big business in Utah

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/7...s-in-Utah.html

... Utah has been named by P3 Update magazine as one of the top 10 movie-making locations in the world. The magazine, a trade journal that deals with "methods, tools, processes of Preproduction, Production and Postproduction," considers a variety of factors, including not only scenery, but also state-offered incentives, workforce, infrastructure and other attractions.

"This is very exciting news for us," says Marshall Moore, director of the Utah Film Commission. "It's always good to be talked about in trade publications. We were excited when P3 named us one of the top 10 in the U.S. To now be listed in the top 10 in the world is fantastic."...

Speaking of great leadership, it looks like uber-developer Talisker has every intention of taking the Park City Area in general and the Canyons Resort specifically to the top of the heap in the ski industry. This new hire is a huge coup for the future of the metro's resort development.

Talisker hires private golf and ski club expert

http://www.parkrecord.com/ci_3555691?source=most_viewed

...Thompson has lived in Colorado his entire life, he says, and has headed Vail Resorts Development, the company's real estate arm, for 17 years. During that time, Thompson oversaw Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone ski resorts, and helped redevelop Jackson Hole Golf and Tennis Club in Jackson Hole, Wyo., as well as the company's employee housing program...

...Already Thompson feels comfortable in Park City it reminds him of Vail five years ago, he says, though he believes real estate is going to "boom here even more."

While Vail fights Interstate 70, which runs right through its town, he finds Park City feels more like a town.

"Park City's got locals, and tourists and schools and it's got Main Street," he observes. "A lot of people in Vail never go to Vail. They go skiing on Vail's mountain, but they don't go into town much."

Thompson agrees with Talisker's environmentally-sensitive philosophy...

...When it comes to developing property, Thompson's vision is of a unique and architecturally-controlled community. He worries about the "homogenization of America" the look-a-like Main Streets that can, in some cases, also produce look-a-like neighborhoods. At times, towns can look so much alike that, Thompson observes, "you can sometimes go to one ski resort to the next and you don't know one from the other."

It is therefore important that resorts try to keep their personality despite the rush and convenience of other facilities made available, he concludes...

Salt Lake City Metro - Transit Updates

UTA receives federal funding earlier than expected

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/7...-expected.html

WASHINGTON — The Federal Transit Administration announced Monday that it will advance a total of $182.4 million in New Starts funding to help with seven projects already under way in five states, including in Utah.

The state is expected to get more than $37 million for two separate projects...

...The monies are being paid out earlier than originally expected because of unallocated, leftover funds in the FTA's fiscal year 2010 budget for new construction.

The Utah Transit Authority can now use the extra cash for other projects, including the West Valley and airport TRAX lines, FrontRunner extension to Provo and the planning of a Draper-Sandy TRAX route...
