Seattle: Salesforce HQ2

Time to get ready for another influx of tech bros!

With its $15.7 billion acquisition of Tableau Software, announced Monday morning, Salesforce isn’t just making a bet on a single company, or on the business intelligence and data visualization market. It’s betting on Seattle as a source of future hiring and growth, escalating the competition for tech talent in the region.

“Seattle will become our second headquarters of Salesforce,” said Marc Benioff, the company’s co-founder and co-CEO, in his prepared remarks on a conference call discussing the deal. “It’s going to be our HQ2, if you will.”

My question: Is this more because Tableau is already a large company, or is it more (per above) about where future growth will happen?

Salesforce has 70,000 square feet in Bellevue, but Tableau is several times as large locally, and growing at a high rate.

Also, is the HQ2 moniker more of a typical thing you say when you buy a largish company, or does it really suggest some sort of co-leadership?

Salesforce is going to be a monster (more so than it already is) with Tableau which is becoming a standard in data analytics visualization.
