Notting Hill Carnival 2012

Every August the streets of West London come alive with colour, noise, people, music, food and dance (and drugs, booze and stabbings).

The event dates from the 60's and is held over two days in August, usually a Sunday and bank holiday Monday (national holiday). The event attracts over a million people, making it one of the worlds biggest street parties. The general theme is Caribbean, celebrating London's huge Jamaican/ Barbadian/ Trinidadian population (and other ex- colonies). There is a constant smell of jerk chicken stands everywhere, though all sorts of world street foods are available. During the day (particularly Sunday) the event is much lighter in vibe, with more children and families (though there is still plenty of rum and red stripe flowing freely, and plenty of more illicit substances). My pictures are during this family friendly period, though don't let that fool you. The event is notorious for crime and there is guaranteed to be at least one murder a year. Especially once the sun goes down and hard drugs and hard liquor rule the night, and drum n bass and jungle bass lines rock the neighbourhood buildings.

I missed it last year and had been looking forward to it for a year....unfortunately I had to work Monday (which is the best day)....and even more annoyingly, I committed the cardinal photographers sin of forgetting to recharge my battery! So having waited a year I found myself in the thick of the action with a mere 8% battery. Anyway I did my best with what I had, and will be back for sure next year. Anyway, enjoy what I have from 2012.

Fantastic photos mate . Considering there is 1 million + people packed into a relatively small area and with all the alcohol and drugs consumed I am surprised there isn't a lot more trouble.

This looks like fun, but also the kind of thing I would tend to miss traveling because it's on a long weekend in August. Too bad they don't do it in September.
