Wow, I never thought in a million years I'd see a photo thread of Oshawa! Been a long time since I've been there (my Bubby and Zaidy passed away many years ago, and most of the rest of my relatives in the area are now in or very near Toronto), but it really doesn't look too much different, perhaps just a little grittier with a couple of newer buildings thrown in for a little change of pace!

Thanks for posting them!

Reminds me a little of Windsor.

Thanks for another great thread Flar. You should re-do Sarnia. Downtown has seen many positive changes since you photographed it.

It is kinda Windsor-esque, isn't it? Thanks for that.

Nice! Didn't expect a thread for Oshawa either. As someone who has spent a great deal of time in Durham Region I can say that all the rumours are true about the dirty 'shwa.

For those not in the know Oshawa is very much an industrial city that has seen better days and pretty much only growing due to proximity to Toronto. It has it's own character for sure but is increasingly becoming a bedroom community.

There's probably just a pre-war strip by the lake and the rest is just random roads with random houses with some of the roads.

There is something totalitarian and Stalinesque about this mural:

It looks like it belings in 1950's Moscow!

Nice! Flar has sort of made the 'shwa seem somewhat, uh.. bare-able?

Thanks for posting those; I had heard of the place, but knew nothing about it. Some of the downtown areas appear to have a comfortable human scale about them, and the high-rises seem strangely out of context. This one evoked an instantaneous visceral, involuntarily vocal response from me:

As soon as I saw it I exclaimed, "Aaaagh! Nasty!" It might sort of work in a better setting surrounded with other buildings of similar scale and softened with some landscaping, especially large trees, but the way it's situated it's frightening in appearance, all fortified-looking and sticking up all by itself, dominating its surroundings. For me it evokes a feeling like an alien guard tower.

Is that your best MK impersonation?

Aaron (Glowrock)

edit: Oshawa has plenty of midrise to semi-high rise buildings, Robert. Unfortunately, most of them are 60's era commie-block looking things... My bubby and zaidy (if you don't know, hebrew for grandma and grandpa) lived kind of on the north side of town in one of those commie-block looking towers. Not the greatest architecture in the world, most definitely!

Now if only they could build their GM head office to look like the Detroit one, and develop a skyline.

Nice pictures! I kind of expected that you'd eventually get to Oshawa. Your pictures help me understand what Oshawa is like. I originally thought as a kid that Oshawa was a big city because of the population. Then I saw it on a map and saw that amalgamation and subdivision-building made it so big, and that it wasn't as big as the population indicated. So, then I thought that it was more like an overgrown large town or very small city. But your pictures show a lot of midrises, and show that it is fairly important aside from the automobile factories.

My old Chevy Impala was built in Oshawa.

These pics show that Oshawa is a separate city and not just a suburb of Toronto. One thing struck me while looking through the pics though: Where are all the people?

wait, do people really call it the "shwa"? Aside from the 70s and 80s monstrosities, looks good to me.
