Its an old secret ritual conducted that stems back from the building of the great pyramids. The overlords and construction high priests and tribe managers gather, and pray to the god of construction and labor to grant them access to the promise land, which is why this tower is rising so fast and ahead of the schedule by a long shot. Sometimes ancient practices work. This is sort of a divine protection against the demons aka NIMBYS and DOL building inspectors. It keeps the poison out, and the progress up!

And its worked... yielding this monolith. ESB needs to hit the gym, looking a little frail.

That moment when a 58 story building dwarfs its 60 and 77 story neighbors

This thing is a work of art though, definitely the type of building I like seeing in NYC

And to think 270 Park will be bulkier.

What I love most about this building is how it brings a little balance to the skyline. There have been so many skinny supertalls built in NY as of late, which is great, but we needed a throwback to a mass monster, and that's what this has done!

Final parapet is shaped and close to completion. The first spire piece is already in place

Between 270 Park and the Grand Hyatt tower, this area will be spectacular. Hopefully, something awesome will rise on the Pfizer site too.

Imagine if those towers had been built today.

I think the slender towers are fine, and really most of them are in the same area of the skyline. We could use some slenders in the Hudson Yards, and eventually will need that in east Midtown.
What I'm grateful for hear is the top, and the throwback to the classic New York skyline. And of course, another place to view the skyline and skyscrapers. I hope it will be lit by Christmastime.

breaking news: looks like 1 Vanderbilt has beaten the billionaires' towers to top off. The 100' spire was assembled swiftly this morning.

They aren't done yet, they've only installed 6 of the 11 sections right now

It seems just "yesterday" when this started construction. It was still below grade almost 2 years ago. Love this tower!!!

One Vanderbilt Reaches Top Of Crown With Spire Installation Imminent, In Midtown East

Quote:
One Vanderbilt has reached a huge milestone as construction has topped out on the supertall commercial skyscraper’s tiered steel crown. Workers will soon begin assembly of the 100-foot-tall architectural spire, which will bring the project’s total height to 1,401 feet. Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox and developed by SL Green, the 77-story Midtown East tower will have a three-story indoor and outdoor public observatory situated at 1,020 feet above street level. Construction of the spire could conceivably finish before the end of the week, given the tremendous speed with which One Vanderbilt has shot upward into the sky.

New photos from street level and from above show the sheer height and presence of One Vanderbilt. Click here for YIMBY’s previous article that shows views from the outdoor section of the observatory.

The curtain wall is quickly approaching the first setback where the observatory will be located. Previous renderings of One Vanderbilt show the façade of the crown portion made up of glass that highlights the dense array of diagonally sloped steel beams. Upward-projecting lights will illuminate the crown and architectural spire.

Saw this tower after work today, it looks like the lower portion of the spire was actually erected already.
