I'm surprised the Phoenix flag is ranked as high as it is. Not one I'd put in my top five.

Thunder Bay flies its flag all over town, and almost always on its own flag pole. We're not as extreme about it as Chicago is with their flag, but its more common to see here than Toronto's flag is in Toronto.

I don't think there is anything wrong with cities having their own flags, they simply need to have well designed flags. None of this "stick your logo on a white field" crap. Flags should never have text on them either.

No shit? Chicago isn't a federal district.

I don't think they would mind if the Chicago skyline was on there, or even just the Willis Tower or Hancock Building. I know I wouldn't. But a city flag on a state license plate makes no sense unless the city was also the state, or federal district.

...

I still have our old D.C. license plates at my parent's house.. I'm glad they're still using them. It was odd to see them in mass again after so many years, but in Chicago, while they shot Transformers 3.

denver's is ugly and provo's is hilarious.

state flags seem to be a bit more consistant. i'm a fan of the flags of new mexico, colorado, and texas. california's is awesome too and i don't mind the writing because it seems consistant with cali cities having their names on their flags as well.

the tennessee flag's grown on me too.

The stars on Tennessee's flag I believe represents the three regions of the state...mountainous, middle, and west Tennessee, which do all have their own "flavors."

The Missouri flag is kind of meh.

Here is the Missouri seal which is a close up of the inside of the Missouri flag.

Pittsburgh's is pretty badass -- none of those silly little stars and pastel stripes.

i love Birmingham's flag, and glad to see it made the top 50 (should be higher.) it looks like a commie nation's flag.

I agree actually. The colors are very unique, and black and yellow does hint at badassness.

I think that honor would go to Albuquerque first.

For me, the flags that are most appealing are:

Corpus Christi
Phoenix
Albuquerque
Atlanta

There are many good ones, and some are really awful.

In my post back on the first page, I pointed out that I've found only one other flag with the black-yellow combo, which is one of my favorite color schemes: Baltimore

Sort of ironic, though, to have a rainbow design in that part of the country.

Ironic? Why? I don't get it -- most Mormons are gay, right?

California has a great state flag, but the cities within....

Fresno: not just a city, but also an indie fashion boutique
Los Angeles: something Spike Lee wore in 1992
Oakland: where people don't see color, because they're literally colorblind
Sacramento: Intro to Graphic Design
San Francisco: drawn by a first-grader with permanent markers
San Diego & San Jose: "Crap, we have to make a seal and a flag? Wait, I know..."

Some of the smaller cities look a lot better.
