DuBois, PA

DuBois (pop. 7,794) is the largest city in Clearfield County (pop. 81,642) and has an urban cluster population of 12,205. Located 100 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, DuBois is the commercial and logistical hub of a vast swath of north-central Pennsylvania... thanks in part to its location at the intersection of many important highways (I-80, US-219, US-119, US-322).

DuBois (pronounced doo-boys) was laid out in 1872 by lumber magnate and French Huguenot John DuBois. The town would prosper due to lumber and coal extraction and would later develop industrial concerns. Today DuBois hosts a number of powdered metal factories and is a center for professional services, commerce, transportation and health care in the region.

DuBois is home to a Penn State branch campus. There is a massive gated community just a couple miles north of DuBois called Treasure Lake. It has about 4,000 permanent residents along with thousands of part-time residents.

At least two cowboy restaurants. The Fort Worth & the hot dog place. As expected from Pennsylvania, DuBois is town of beautiful buildings & scenery.

Is Treasure Lake a resort community?

"Texas Hots" don't really have anything to do with Texas... it's a type of chili dog developed by Greek immigrants to the region.

Treasure Lake is part "resort community", part "affluent locals".

Nice pictures. I never figured DuBois would be as big as it was; I figured Clearfield was the only place of size in the county. DuBois looks grittier than it porobably should be, like an Oil City but with a commercial district that's grittier than Oil City's.

Downtown DuBois is much more vibrant than Downtown Oil City... there's only a few storefront vacancies in DuBois... and a diverse array of interesting businesses.

Great shots, Evergrey! I'm actually going to be driving through there on my way to Wilkes-Barre/Mountain Top this afternoon. Gotta check it out a bit!

Beautiful photos. In some shots, DuBois reminds me of a bigger, more prosperous Brookville.

I only know of DuBois from a visit back in 1981 - and even that wasn't to DuBois proper; my folks were inexplicably sent an invite to check out timeshares at Treasure Lake (working class families in Appalachian eastern Ohio weren't about to plop down a few grand for a timeshare - but hey, a free lunch and day pass seemed like a good reason for a roadtrip!)

Anyway, just looking at the photos you've posted, I'm reminded of East Liverpool, Wheeling, etc.

Pretty much, yes... And the same goes for many West Virginia towns!

Oh yes, I do agree that the pronunciation of DuBois (Doo-BOYS) is terrible...
