Yeah, the column is probably think to have the least impact on the railway RoW so they can rearrange the tracks, etc.

Upon audience's request, re-posting these also in here. I didn't realize there was a separate thread for this, but here we go...

Low Level Road (North Vancouver) transformation update from today.

The upper road terracing is very tall and steep. Hopefully it will hold.

Last minute shot of the new railway overpass.

[Edit] Please thank you wife for the photos, Klazu.

I've got an engineering question: what's the rationale for the rocks-in-rectangles retaining wall system that is used here over poured concrete or a steel cofferdam barrier system? Is it improved drainage? Ease of construction? Cost? Ability to repair damaged sections? Also, will grasses be planted on all of the retaining wall sections that aren't vertical?

Someone just asked about this on their website: (green wall)

Quote:
"The draft landscaping plans provide descriptions of the types of plantings and their locations, which include green walls adjacent to certain lengths of Low Level Road. "
Quote:
Yes, art works embossed in concrete will be installed on the Spirit Trail Overpass abutment and along a portion of the Low Level Road retaining wall.
Nothing direct on their choice to use MSE retaining wall but from a geotechnical report:

http://porttalk.ca/document/show/116

Quote:
The relevant recommendations and conclusions from the Stewart-EBA report included the use of flexible retaining structures with reinforced earth construction (i.e., mechanically-stabilized earth walls) to minimize costs and accommodate any settlement/movement of the structure...

Minor photo update from porttalk.ca

Spirit trail overpass (over 3rd)

Wish they would stay current - it's looking pretty cool now.

My own shot (really a skyline shot) that shows some of the Esplanade widening

Never seen a green wall look so lush. Will it stay like that with trucks flying by every few seconds?

I don't know. I can't believe how well it is doing, hopefully it continues to do so! Certainly makes for a nicer atmosphere, especially for cyclists using the road. This road is going to be great once it is done, but I'm really looking forward to the completed Spirit Trail in this area.

1. New Westbound Lane Opening on New Low Level Road

The westbound lane of the new Low Level Road is scheduled to open this week, marking a major milestone towards Project completion.

Late in the evening of Tuesday, August 19th (weather dependent), motorists travelling westbound will use the new Low Level Road. Eastbound traffic will continue to use the existing Low Level Road....

While the road will be open by the end of October, some final clean-up works may take place into late 2014.
Tonight's the night (for partial opening).

Weird, CNV just told me Aug 26th on Twitter, while linking to that same update. I'll be driving that way tonight anyway so we'll see.

Thx for the pics Klazu. We need more North Shore photographers.

Traffic Update – August 19, 2014

New Westbound Lane Opening on New Low Level Road

The westbound lane of the new Low Level Road is scheduled to open this week, marking a major milestone towards Project completion. In the late evening of Tuesday, August 19 (weather dependent), motorists travelling westbound will use the new Low Level Road. Eastbound traffic will continue to use the existing Low Level Road.
Weekend Full Road Closure on Low Level Road - From Kennard Avenue
to St. Andrews Avenue

A planned weekend closure (weather dependent) will take place August 22 – 25 and will be in effect from Friday at 9 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m. The closure will allow crews to relocate the temporary detour near St. Andrews Avenue and continue work on the retaining wall.

Detour routes will be clearly marked and motorists are advised to exercise caution in the area and to follow the directions of traffic personnel and road signs. Emergency and Port access will be maintained at all times.

Well they'll just go up where all those barrels are and get onto the new road. Shouldn't be that bad.

This video shows how it's supposed to look at 5:30, but it doesn't look very close to completion yet.

Basically going to 3rd street is like taking an off-ramp and Low Level becomes the default route, as it should.

They were still working on the ramp when I tried to go westbound at 9:30pm. Would be surprised if they finished by midnight.
