Vancouver to be a "Cultural Capital" for its 125th B'Day
This kind of smacks of one of those government programs begging to be cut, but I guess we might as well enjoys the $1.75 million Cultural Capital funding while we can. I'd forgotten next year is the 126th birthday for the City - has it really been 25 years since Expo 86?! How wonder how many times they'll close Granville for Dirty Green Astroturf Days ? http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/nati...apital-in-its-125th-year/article1797613/
I read that article and thought it was a bit ironic, since Victoria has decimated all the local arts groups by cutting their funding in the last few years.
Some more details are emerging of the City's 125th celebrations. Robert Kerr who led the Cultural Olympiad will be the producer and some former VANOC staff will be managing sponsorship. There'll be a civic celbration on April 6, and a 3-day-long festival July 8-10. http://www.allianceforarts.com/blog/vanc...welcomes-vancouver-2010-games-experience
they asked people in a news story I saw on CTV about the $7 million the city wants to spend and of the 3 people I saw asked - none of them wanted the money spent they all said it was a waste and the money should be spent on homeless, transit whatever but not a party
In the EU they have a thing where they name different cities "Cultural Capitals" on an annual basis, and that's probably where the idea comes from.
The Cultural Olympiad around the Olympics was fantastic, but for it to work with a 125th birthday they better have a good plan to promote it as a stand alone attraction.
