A great mix of the old and the new, as well as the dense and the big box stores with parking lots.

Beautiful looking small city.

Love the low floor transit.

The built form of so many French cities is fantastic. Caen looks like a good place to walk around & explore all of the little shops & restaurants located along the dense streetfronts.

Neat, except for this one, which looks like anywhere in South Carolina.

Caen looks better than expected. I never had the chance to visit the city centre, I only transited there once on my way to Honfleur and Le Havre. 400,000 seems exagerated though, given that the population of Grand Caen (Caen agglo) is around 225,000. Those urban areas numbers are most of the time not very representative of the real size of the city.

Interesting tour. I was intrigued by the way the street trees are trimmed, sort of like a hedge but high above the sight lines, preserving greenery and complementing, not blocking, the view of the built streetscape.

It is not the urban area but the metropolitan area (aire urbaine in french) based on a 40% commuter rate.
France is a country where exuburbs are very developed.

Nice. I just love the urban fabric. How many cities in North America of similar size are so attractive from a walkability perspective?

Ok thanks for making it clear. Caen is much bigger than I thought, making it almost as big as Grenoble while I thought it was the size of Le Mans or Le Havre.

Grenoble metro is over 530,000 while Caen metro is bit under the 400,000 (in reality 390,000 but the main Wikipedia article has a wrong population data).
Note that this is the limit of 1999 with the population of 2007, in reality both metropolitan area are bigger.
