Great!

You should do an inventory of all French cities you've done a photothread about. Just a list, maybe make a map next to it or something...

Great pics, but you mean "on the Loire and Cher rivers"... Touraine is not a river, it's the region around Tours.

Yes I knew but I didn't reread the introduction before posting.

I was born in Cher departement in Bourges.

Thanks you !

The Google map map is weird, some big city are cited as smaller than other large cities.
Grenoble is bigger than Saint Etienne but it doesn"t seem so in the map.

I like the narrow streets/alleys and the density along them. I too wish the sun had helped more, but still nice to see this city. Thanks.

Wow, sometimes I envy the pedestrian-friendly, cobblestone, narrow streets of European cities. Any U.S. city of the same population would never have the same vibrant streetlife. Great photos -- you really give a feel for the city. Thanks!

I think they're going by commune (municipality) and not aire urbain (metro area), in which case Saint Etienne indeed is bigger right?

That's right but it is only because Saint Etienne is bigger in land size.
St Etienne : 178,530 inh (79.97 km²)
Grenoble : 156,793 inh (18.13 km²)

In the reality Grenoble (urban and metro area) is more populated than St Etienne,
It also feels much bigger.

Great photos. A couple close family members and I were in France a couple years ago. We were fortunate (or unfortunate) to drive through Tours, driving from Blois to Nantes. We did not intend to go through it (but around it), but we took a wrong turn... and ended up heading into Tours. My first impression was that it was a smaller version of Paris, more so than any other place I saw in France.

That first pic felt som familiar, then I realized I've actually been there! Only for a few hours and it was an organized trip (the year I took architecture at KTH), but we got to hang out in that square and eat some righteous franch sandwiches. There was a baguetterie (sp?) just off the square, not so easy to order when I don't speak french
Your pics show me how much I missed, feels like I'd need a week of just walking around to get a sense of the place.
