X Downtown Landmarks

I was just thinking about the old symphony hall fountain and got to thinking, how bout a thread of found or own pictures from downtown relics that are no longer there. I've seen plenty of early 1900's pics so I'm more curious about ones from the last few decades. Here are a couple to get it started, both from google.

uh, no. Ive seen way more people in Civic Space than I ever saw at PSP. And it has the handicap of a less central location so its not used as by as many office workers.

I'm glad that plaza is gone. It was good for its time, but it was a waste of space and the 3rd st underpass was a strange idea crafted at a time when DT was unsafe for pedestrians.

the whole city of Phx had those bold mustard yellow traffic lights back in the day! you always knew when you were within phx city limits.

also, while not dt, does anyone have info on the log cabin motel on VB?
it looks closed, and there's a big backhoe parked on site.
i'm worried about losing this kitschy classic.

I always liked the PSP awning/shade/laser thing. I wonder if the city will ever re-use it for a shade structure at a park in the future.

No, they won't. You know why? That would require planning, vision and forethought. Our civic leaders lack those things by and large. The PSP Shade structures were sold to some City in Japan (forget which one, sorry) I was told by a project foreman some time ago.

Its sad because the PSP white shade sails were the only part of the park that actually worked. Reusing them on the surface lot directly East of the Westward Ho as a place for the Public Market would've been perfect. But again, vision= lacking.

I drove by it on my way in this morning. They're tearing it down as we speak - the eastern row of buildings is already gone.

You're starting to sound like Don. I think it's because you've been exposed to the success real cities' CBDs.

Ive been to a lot of these places before and seen more successful downtowns. The depressing thing is seeing them all in a row, one right after another. Thats what really drives the point home.

But, Im still an optimist, all it means is Phoenix has the chance to become the most modern, sleek downtown in the country. We'll never have blocks of 1890s urban tenements, but maybe we can be a great 21st century city.
