The mosquitoes don't seem to like the lakefront. I've never been bitten by one while I've been out running along the lakefront. About the only bugs I've ever had to deal with are swarms of gnats, but those only tend to be an issue during the evening hours toward sunset. Other than that, bugs aren't an issue along Chicago's lakefront. I wonder of the lake breezes are a factor in keeping the bugs away?

Needing OFF while riding? Pfft, they wish they could catch me! I'll never forget the time I was riding along and swept up a yellow jacket in my lap. I sort of reached down and carefully shooed it away. Haha

Cool tour! My father in law used to jog the trail from East Side to 31st street to work often. The guy was nuts lol.

I don't think it was mosquitos, since I know they usually leave big red bumps on your skin and normally take at week, and many times even longer. to heal. But I'm also one of those people that must have something in my blood, and my scent thats attractive to insects. If you want to know if you have fleas, just let me walk in an area where they are. They will not only jump on me, but attack me like flies on shit. In this case I never did walk and step on the grass, and as I rode the bike I was contantly slapping at my legs.

Once I was bitten so bad in a backyard of a home my mom was looking at to buy that I was literally sick for a couple days. All of my brothers and sisters was with me in the yard, but no one was attacked and bitten even though they found fleas had jumped on them.
^^^^I am with Steely on this. I used to bike daily 17.5 each way and 1. Never got bit by a damn thing; other than rocks kicked up by cars once in a while; 2. Never stunk....toweled off; if it was real hot I'd wash up a bit with an extra towel and reapply deodorant..no stink

I still bike downtown (about 10 miles each way) though not every day right now...same thing....towel off ....no stink

Oh....once again fantastique tour

Agreed. And missing one swarm to run smack into another.

Beautiful thread too, especially the south and north ends of the ride since I've only seen the section from about Lincoln Park to the Midway.

those bike paths cutting through chicago are great. now i know why steely avoids getting run over by a dump truck. bike tours are always the best.

"Im no photographer by any means"

I beg to differ; sure, not every shot was super-polished and crisp but when you can show us such diverse areas/subjects over such a lengthy trip, who gives a rip if a few shots are blurred or whatever?!? Amazing job, thank you for sharing with us!

Whiting!

So I just randomly came across this website and the pictures of your bike ride from Whiting to Wilmette. I live in Whiting as well.
