..Thanks odinthor! ..I appreciate your help.

This enigmatic slide was just listed on eBay.

"Original 35mm Slide - Scenic View of Los Angeles 1967"

eBay

It looks like a dirt road leading to nowhere.

Can you imagine driving at night and coming upon this. The two posts no doubt saved some lives.

Here's a closer look at the wooden post on the left and the buildings visible in the distance.

detail

I would say that the carved '85' is for the year. . .but the darn slide is dated 1967.

It's a mystery. Get digging.

NoirCityDame's info (below) about what was at that location is included in the above post.

8801 Sunset Blvd.:
This was a Simon’s Drive in as of 1937 at least. In 1945 it was taken over by Amanda & Ralph Stephens, who’d founded the first Dolores in Oklahoma City, OK. Dolores isn't here as of 1950 and at some point a diner named “Jack’s on the Strip” opened here- no other info about the property until it was demolished for Tower Records.
• 1935-37: About this date Simon’s opens a sandwich stand here
• 1945: Dolores Drive-In opens here by this year
• 195?: Becomes Jack’s on the Strip drive-in
• 1970: demolished for Tower Records

St. Genesius building is the very same building that become extremely famous Spago restaurant in 80's and made Wolfgang Puck a household name. Chefs Nancy Silverton and Mark Peel both cooked in there before starting their now-gone Campanile and La Brea Bakery.

St. Genesius/ Spago building is still there, looking untouched. To my knowledge, it never had any another restaurant or any other businesses.

The Texaco building is now Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, remodeled with a heavy hand.

Agree, Mt. Lee area sounds most likely. The prominent north-south road cutting across the photo pointed towards Palos Verdes Hills is almost certainly Western Av., the cluster of tall buildings on mid Wilshire. The tall whitish building on the right near the B is probably the former Getty Oil Bldg.(22 floors), the blueish building a few blocks to the left (east) on Wilshire the Travelers Insurance Building, also 22 floors. Both would have been there in 1967. The taller (34 floor) Equitable Bldg. across from the Ambassador Hotel wasn't finished until 1969, and the hotel area is blocked by the bush and rock ledge area in the photo anyway, so it is the 22 story Travelers. Across Western from the Getty Oil Bldg. you can just make out the shorter (12 floor) art deco Pellisier (Franklin Insurance) Bldg if you squint, which contains the Wiltern Theater. Banana Louie, not a clue.

Yes, after Spago relocated to Beverly Hills in 2001, I don't think it has been used since to my knowledge, although I was by there recently and it does look like the building's been repainted in the last few months.

It's been used for filming a couple times that I know of. In 2018 it played Spago's (both inside and outside) in the film Billionaire Boys Club, which starred Ansel Elgort, Kevin Spacey, Taron Egerton, Emma Roberts, Judd Nelson and Cary Elwes. It's a decent movie, but hardly got a release because of Kevin Spacey's troubles at the time. ("Made only $126 on the opening day of its limited U.S. theatrical release, where the movie was screened in 12 theaters in 12 U.S. cities.")

The last I heard was someone trying to open a daycare center of some kind there, or was it a pre-school, which seems an extremely weird location for such a thing, but it didn't happen.

Businesses there have used either the 1114 Horn Ave. address or 8795 Sunset Blvd. address, or both.

I know it was built as a Spanish style residence in 1932. In September of 1941 it opened as the Cafe Gala. No one's ever found a photo of it as either the Cafe Gala or the Spanish residence.

Spago / Texaco

I worked for a West Hollywood restaurant group for many years on the strip so I can share what I found over the years to be the case:
Puck rented the Spago building, and he also rented the Texaco as a parking lot because a CUP (conditional use permit) requires restaurants to provide some level of parking. So he had 2 different landlords.
The restaurant landlord kept raising the rent as Spago got more success and that pissed Puck off. the Texaco landlord he got along with.
A few years before this Spago closed Puck silently bought the Texaco property, and when he made his well planned exit to Beverly Hills he let it be known that "no other restaurant will ever be allowed in the Spago building because they can never get any dedicated parking in that area". He also told the landlord to F*** Off forever !
He was right, all of the surrounding parking is dedicated to other properties, so that is why the space has been dormant and left alone. it is a tiny space with no room to add anything.
I am not sure how Puck held / holds the title to the Texaco property ( personel , corporate or REIT or other) but I believe that the Coffee Bean has a 20 yr lease.

I just discovered a post that Allison Martino (Martino's Time Machine/Vintage L.A.) wrote about three months ago:

8801 SUNSET STRIP
by Allison Martino
I've always been fascinated by the history of 8801 Sunset Blvd and Horn Ave.
Here's a 100 year old time line...

The timeline I have in post #58102 above for 8801 Sunset Blvd.:

• 1935-37: About this date Simon’s opens a sandwich stand here
• 1945: Dolores Drive-In opens here by this year
• 195?: Becomes Jack’s on the Strip drive-in
• 1970: demolished for Tower Records

Allison has this photo posted for what was located there in the 1920's:

Martino'sTimeMachine

Caption: In the 1920's, 8801 Sunset Blvd was a dusty old structure that sold and repaired furniture called Venetian Studios. It looked like something straight out of the "Wild Wild West".

EDIT TO ADD: I also found this photo on the Dept. of Water & Power website. They have it dated as 1935 and the address as slightly west at 8811 Sunset Blvd.
Their source of the photo is the USC Digital Libraries that has the same information. If the 1935 date is correct, Simon's was to have appeared at the 8801 address by then.

In the timeline this location was Dolores Drive-In by 1945. Allison has this photo of Dolores (posted previously on NLA at least once HERE):

Allison writes: Check out Horn Ave. swooping down to Sunset Blvd. That building seen on upper right became Spago. In the 1950's, a Cuban restaurant occupied it and in 1961 it became Har-Omar. But it first started out as Cafe Gala, the very first gay bar in West Hollywood, graced with Cole Porter, Judy Garland, Cesar Romero, and where Bobby Short got his start. After Gala it was The St. Genesius.

Taking into "depth of focus" concerns, I'm not convinced the "building on the upper right" is the Café Gala, which it would have been when Dolores occupied that location. To me the building pointed out is up the road further than it should be, maybe. I don't know, what do you guys think? Are there any aerial photos available of this location?

The best I've discovered, the timeline for 1114 Horn Ave. aka 8795 Sunset Blvd. is:

1932: Spanish styled residence built (LoopNet has that date)
1941: Café Gala opens in September (John Walsh turned it into the Café Gala. He sold it to Jimmy Dolan in 1948 and it was open well into the 1950's.)
[Allison notes: In the 50's a Cuban restaurant occupied it. Har-Omar does not sound Cuban...?)
By 1957: Har-Omar and featured something exotic called "Cuisine Fantasia."
1966: There's an Ed Ruscha 1966 photo of this location as the St. Genesius.
By 1969: it was a Russian-Armenian restaurant called Kavkaz.
1982: Spago's
2001: vacant to present

Allison and my timelines need further info.

Related photos:

The DWP page also has these two nearby photos:

(1936) View looking east along the 8800 block of Sunset Boulevard (San Vicente Blvd to Horn Ave).

(1941) Same view looking east along the 8800 block of Sunset Boulevard 5 years later, after the street was widened.
DWP

I had never heard about Sunset Blvd. being widened before.

.

Could this be the mystery cut shown in the 1967 mystery slide.

if so - the dirt road is now paved.

Corey Seeman on flickr

It's on. .or on the way to. . Mt. Lee but I haven't been able to find the exact spot via Google Earth. (yet)

Link

UPDATE

I just looked at the 1967 slide again & I don't think it's the exact same location. (but it could be close )

I jumped the gun...

I found another likely candidate that is also on Mt. Lee.

This one has a sharp drop-off near the cut. (at the farthest barricades). Could this possibly be the drop-off in the 1967 slide?

Corey Seeman on flickr

hmm. .but it looks like erosion.

Here's the 1967 slide again for comparison. (obviously taken from the opposite direction)

eBay

I hate to disprove my own theory but I don't think there's enough land behind the right cut for the road.

Enough of that.

Here's a mystery location from 1935.

eBay

It's a big blurry but thankfully the following detail image are clearer.

Detail of writing on the left with the date.

I can't quite make out Earl's last name.

At lower right the photograph is stamped Keystone Photo Service Inc. (it's cropped out in the top detail)

Does anyone know where the American Slicing Machine Co's. Agency was located?

There were so many companies named American this and American that it's fairly difficult to locate the address.

Good luck minions!

It is further up Mt. Lee Drive ER.

It's a little cut in the hill that's perpendicular to Mt. Lee Drive.

I've seen this before but not quite so big (and not in color). Thanks, Godzilla...Poor Elizabeth.

What is that round thing embedded in the marble step?..It looks similar to a survey marker.

On KFI radio on Sat. night they had a 2 hour interview with a retired LAPD detective, Steve Hodel, who said he is almost certain his father, who was a surgeon, was the killer of Eliz. Short, and may have murdered other women as well. He wrote a book about it. He also said Chief Parker and other former LAPD high ups consider the "Black Dalia" case solved, but not cleared. For some reason they didn't want to arrest and charge the surgeon, who died about 30 years ago. In the interview the retired LAPD detective said Steve Lopez of the LA Times wrote about the case a few years ago, and concluded that the doctor father of the LAPD detective Hodel may indeed have been the killer of Short. A very noirish tale indeed.

Oh boy, Hodel again. I'm on Larry Harnisch's side on this: start here.

You really do have to wonder what kind of person--i.e., Hodel--would strive so mightily to prove that his own father was the BD killer (not to mention his trying to capitalize on the idea).

The operative word here is "tale." Debunked over and over again, but too good a story for gullible media types to give up on.

Larry Harnisch is a true professional and knows this case backward and forward. Pay attention to him and ignore the fables.

Cheers,

Earl
